What is Internet Parent-Child Interaction Therapy and how does it work?
i-PCIT is an
evidence-based treatment for young children with behavioral problems. This service is conducted through
online “coaching” sessions where the therapist provides in-the-moment coaching for parents to practice and learn skills that successfully manage their child’s behavior. With consistent attendance and homework completion,
PCIT can be completed within 12-20 sessions. Although this service is typically used for children ages 2-7, we have adapted the program to be equally as beneficial for older children!
At San Diego Kids First, our experts work closely with parents and caregivers to achieve a holistic view of each unique child and develop a comprehensive treatment plan that works for the whole family. Through i-PCIT, parents will actively participate in sessions by collaborating with their provider to develop lasting techniques that minimize their child’s behavioral concerns, enhance the parent-child relationship, decrease parent stress, and helps families establish routines!
Internet-Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is a great service for parents who describe their child as:
- Defiant / does not listen
- Behavioral issues
- Destructive
- Aggressive
- Disrespectful
- Frequent/intense tantrums
- Attention seeking behaviors
- Problems with sharing/taking turns, etc
- Difficulty regulating their emotions
- Hyperactive

Session Structure: During Internet PCIT (i-PCIT) sessions, the parent/caregiver and child are at home engaged in special playtime, while the therapist observes the play through a Zoom call and provides coaching through an earpiece. In comparison with traditional PCIT, Internet-PCIT shows comparable or even more positive outcomes as parents greatly benefit from learning to use their new skills at home, rather than in an office setting. Holding sessions at home promotes the generalization of skills into a variety of settings for both parents and children!
The Process: PCIT is done across two treatment phases. The first phase of treatment focuses on establishing warmth in your relationship with your child through learning and applying skills proven to help children feel calm, secure in their relationships with their parents, and good about themselves. The second phase of treatment will equip the parent to manage the most challenging aspects of their child’s behaviors while remaining confident, calm, and consistent in their approach to discipline.
