Understanding the various types of therapy available for children can be overwhelming, so we want to help clarify the unique benefits of OT and how it differs from psychotherapy.

Meet our occupational therapist, Heidi Joachims, OTD!

Heidi is a board-certified Doctor of Occupational Therapy. She has worked with diverse populations but really flourishes when working with children. Heidi believes her purpose is to instill confidence and hope in the children and parents she works with through collaboratively identifying how to best improve functioning and independence.

Occupational Therapy vs Traditional Therapy

Occupational Therapy (OT) focuses on helping children develop the skills they need for everyday activities and addresses specific barriers that hinder participation in these everyday activities. Occupational therapy looks at developmental challenges, such as fine and gross motor skills, sensory processing, executive functioning, visual perceptual skills, and daily living skills.

Psychotherapy helps children express their feelings, improve social skills, and resolve psychological issues. Play therapy uses play as a medium for younger children to explore emotions and behavioral challenges, while talk therapy involves conversation-based methods for older children and adolescents to understand and manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

Key Differences:

Body versus mind: OT looks at how the body’s systems are impacting daily functioning and identifies ways to maximize the child’s independence. Psychotherapy explores emotions and addresses psychological issues.

Skill Development: OT aims to improve physical, sensory, and cognitive skills. Psychotherapy focuses on emotional growth and psychological healing.

Tools and Techniques: Although OT and psychotherapy both utilize a play-based approach for younger children, OT sessions typically focus on play activities that target developmental goals or the body’s systems, whereas psychotherapy utilizes play to help children express themselves and open up emotionally.

Overlap Between Therapies

While occupational and traditional therapy have distinct goals and methods, there are areas of overlap:

Play-Based Therapy: OT and traditional therapy both utilize a play-based approach to identify and focus on the child’s specific needs.

Holistic Approach: Both therapies aim to support the overall well-being of the child.

Personalized Plans: Each therapy is tailored to meet the unique needs of the child.

Supportive Environment: All therapies provide a safe and nurturing space for children to grow and develop.

Why Choose Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy is particularly beneficial for children who face challenges in performing everyday tasks due to developmental delays, physical disabilities, or sensory processing issues. If you notice your child struggling with fine motor skills, sensory sensitivities, or daily living activities, OT might be the right choice.
